Small Eyes and Gutter

Sarah Munro exhibits Small Eyes and Gutter, paintings formed through a process of translating digital images into droplets of oil paint with a Digital Painting Machine, which are then sprayed over the surface of custom-designed face-like fibreglass supports.

Surfaces close to the machine’s nozzle are sharper, while others drift into a soft-focus haze. Munro’s strangely ambiguous forms, carved by hand and underpainted in a flesh-tinted acrylic, blur the boundaries between painting, sculpture and the horror-flick genre, imbuing the experience of a digitally processed image with a manifest physicality.
