Big Cs

Post boxes, trains, small change and Chinese swordplay— from such divergent threads Auckland artist Eddie Clemens orchestrates a web of references to the underbelly of some of the big 'Cs' today— Communism, Capitalism and Colonization. Variously employing mail boxes from the defunct National Mail service, a Chinese method of sword construction and 50¢ coins flattened on railway tracks, Big Cs evokes the communication networks and cultural geographies that underwrite contemporary life. Clemens’ idiosyncratic treatment of these systems orchestrates their diverse parts into a celebration of chance marked by humour and a distinctly polyvalent Thomas Pynchon-esque logic.
