Introduction

“The room was big and sat at the other end of the apartment on the third floor to his living area, the kitchen, and bathroom. It had a balcony and sparse masculine decoration. There were paintbrushes in the dining room and a mixture of guide and art books in the library. He spoke a little English but not much and rarely uses it, and will probably never use a computer.”

Returning to Auckland from Barcelona, Fiona Connor brings with her a set of works which reconstitute particular quotidian moments of Catalan time. Free Literature is a piecing together of images and texts which appeared in many places on one day that Sarah Hopkinson elaborates on below, and sits alongside Connor's new book Loquo Barcelona as an articulation of what it is to revisit.

Loquo Barcelona is a collection of portraits of once-prospective housemates, a set of drawings for which Connor revisited those rooms she chose (or was chosen) not to rent. Designed by Tim Coster and including a written work by the artist, Loquo Barcelona will be launched at the opening of Free Literature.

A member of artist-run initiative Gambia Castle, and former member of Special Gallery board, Fiona Connor graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Elam in 2003. She recently held her solo show, Old Buildings, at Gambia Castle, and recent group exhibitions include 'en permute' with MAS, Barcelona; 'Shack' at the University of California in San Diego and ongoing contributions to the edition program at ARTSPACE, Auckland.
