Can you say? Do you recall? Where your affinities gather? By what name your subjectivities go? Perhaps the answers don't immediately spring to mind, more questions materialising instead? Although seeming to make demands of you, all enquiries and objects put forward here are, in a broader sense, purely invitations to talk. The pieces that comprise From What Position Do You Speak… encourage participation and facilitate discussion of the verbal, spatial and sensory variety.

In order for one to speak another must listen, and Lacey's sculptures do. Though at times commanding in mass, they remain gracious, permitting themselves to be altered without ever compromising their integrity.

Sonya Lacey is an MFA graduate from Elam School of Fine Arts and has exhibited throughout New Zealand. She is a founding member of the artist collective and project space Newcall Gallery, Auckland, where she will have a solo exhibition early next year.
