SNS Challenger

Between 1872 and 1876, the HMS Challenger sailed around the world, primarily to collect seabed data, but with an auxiliary aim to photograph the places it visited. The images it collected, which now reside in the Natural History Museum in London, constitute a portrait of the world through the eyes of Victorian Britain.

Gary McLeod re-works this voyage today with the creation of a social networking site, the SNS Challenger, which invites locals who live anywhere the HMS Challenger visited to re-photograph these locations - a collective project which reflects the multiplicity of views the Internet makes it so easy to express and access.

Open days onboard the SNS Challenger: June 28th - July 7th.
