Combining work by Will Gresson and Luke Munn, who migrated to Germany simultaneously, DOUBLEGOER investigates how experience is transmitted to bricks and bodies, exploring place and presence, translation and translocation. All The Places I’ve Never Been uses code to create a negative image of presence over time, the resulting data burnt, shredded and dispersed – software rewriting the somatic. Tracks and Traces examines Berlin’s relationship to its divided past and how the narrative is represented in the former geisterbahnhöfe (‘ghost stations’) of the city’s ubiquitous S and U-Bahn lines. Collaborative project Bodies/Cities, provides scores for ways of moving a body through urban space and documents these projects. For the duration of the month, Window Online has invited artists to respond to Gresson and Munn’s original scores which instruct “a unique situation, comprised of the participant’s body, the immediate environment and their performative interpretation.”

DOUBLEGOER was conceived as part of a body of work addressing place and person, and the challenges of expressing lived experience from a distance and through barriers of dislocation. ‘Doublegoer’ is a literal translation of the German doppelgänger, which ranges in meaning from its historical origins as a paranormal twin or a sinister form of bilocation to its contemporary use as a look-alike or copy. DOUBLEGOER thus speaks to the duality of the immigrant experience; living and functioning in a foreign setting, all the while experiencing a familiar disconnect to the surrounding culture, language and custom.
